Dr Atkins recommends 500mg of L-Carnitine 3x per day if you are battling to lose weight. In fact, he says that in really stubborn cases he ups this amount to 5,000mg in divided doses before meals. Have any of you tried this? Might be just the thing I need! Posts: 82 | From: Durban, South Africa | Registered: Nov 2001

I didn't have a great reaction to taking it. It made me jumpy and lightheaded. But then again, my body is so gosh darn sensitive that I'm not sure my experience is best.
I'd say give it a try and see how you do.

Dr. D recommends L-Carnitine for O's with cardiovascular disease. I'm not sure of the dosage he recommends, but your amounts might be a little high.

L-Carnitine L-Carnitine is an amino acid found in high levels in muscle tissue & is synthesized in the body from Lysine and Methionine. L-Carnitine plays an essential role in fat metabolism, by transporting long-chain fatty acids into the Mitochondria; which act like power houses and make energy available to the body of the cell. Long-chain Fatty acids are oxidized in mitochondria by a process called beta-oxidation & stored as ATP, a prime energy fuel. Beta-oxidation is especially important for our muscles, which largely depend on fatty acids for energy.
